Chris Penrose Buckley on the Friends of custodians support to the SDG land right indicator 1.4.2
In this interview, Chris Penrose-Buckley from DFID and leader of the Friends of the Custodians explains the role of this sub-group and how this indicator is meant measure people's access to land in a holistic way and considering power imbalances - i.e. by including the perception of tenure security (not only administrative records of land property) and by particularly tracking women's access to land.
The Friends of the Custodians group is composed of DFID, Global Affairs Canada, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), the Global Land Indicators Initiative (GLII), Omidyar Network and the International Land Coalition (ILC). Their activities are supported by the Secretariat of the Global Donor Platform.
In March 2017, the Platform's Global Donor Working Group on Land decided to set up a multi-stakeholder sub-group to support the development of the methodology and metadata for a land tenure indicator within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The sub-group was named "Friends of the Custodians" as it is specifically helping the custodian agencies for indicator 1.4.2 to develop the methodology and metadata to be used by countries to monitor progress on land tenure issues. The custodian agencies are the UN-Habitat and the World Bank.
