Oumar Sylla on an indicator tracking the progress on land tenure rights
In this interview, Oumar Sylla (Land and GLTN Unit Leader at UN-Habitat) talks about the importance of the land tenure security indicator 1.4.2 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since late 2015, when this indicator was included in the SDG process, two custodian agencies - UN-Habitat and the World Bank - were assigned to the develop the methodology and metadata to be used by countries to report on progress in land tenure security and, therefore, help to achieve the SDG target 1.4, namely:
By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance.
The Platform's Global Donor Working Group on Land has played a major role in advocating this land indicator to be included in the SDGs. The Group now supports the custodian agencies by mobilising resources (knowledge, people and funds) for the development of the indicator methodology and by raising awareness of key groups (national statistical offices, civil society, the broader land community) to this process.
