Africa Agriculture status report

Agriculture is at the basis of economic development. This is especially true for Africa, where 70% of the population is involved in agriculture. Moreover, World Bank estimates that the food market in Africa will continue to grow and will be worth US$1 trillion by 2030. Additionally, the demand for food will double and with the increasing pressure to import, the sector is seen as the chance for growing economies and creating decent jobs for youth and smallholder farmers.
Agricultural transformation
The process of commercialization of agriculture, moving from subsistence-oriented and farm-centred activities into one that is focused on the off-farm parts of the value chain is starting to take place in Africa. Agricultural value chains are becoming more urbanized and demand focused with premium quality. The employment possibilities in the agricultural and food sector are growing as well, with more opportunities arising from trade, farm servicing, agro processing, urban retailing and food services. The challenge remains to harvest these benefits and truly use them to drive the economic and agricultural transformation. Additionally, the report calls for governmental support and guidance for the transformation process, ensuring that benefits reach the most vulnerable and the smallholder farmers.
