Green Jobs for Rural Youth in Agri-Food Systems

The Thematic Working Group on Rural Youth Employment (TWG RYE) has recently been exploring the topic of green jobs for youth. This ongoing conversation led to a webinar GREEN JOBS FOR RURAL YOUTH IN AGRI-FOOD SYSTEMS, which took place on 25 April 2022, to discuss entry points for understanding green jobs in agri-food systems.

CFS process on youth engagement and employment

Throughout 2022, the Thematic Working Group on Rural Youth Employment (TWG RYE) will be following the policy convergence process towards the development of policy recommendations in the Committee of World Food Security (CFS) on Promoting Youth Engagement and Employment in Agriculture and Food Systems, which was initiated at the 49th CFS in October 2021.

Youth employment and entrepreneurship in sustainable agri-food system transformation in Africa (Seminar)

The GDPRD Thematic Working Group on Rural Youth Employment member GIZ (Global Project on Rural Employment with a Focus on Youth) in partnership with the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) organized a session on “Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Agri-Food System Transformation in Africa” as a side event to the 7th EU-Africa Business Forum (EABF22).

Youth for Climate-Resilient Agriculture Competition (YCRAC)

FAO and IAAS (International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences), in collaboration with YPARD (Young Professionals for Young Professionals for Agricultural Development) have launched the Youth for Climate-Resilient Agriculture Competition (YCRAC) to support and promote youth engaged in developing greener and more resilient agrifood systems.

Youth accounts for one out of every six people worldwide, and millions of them are engaged in agriculture. The empowerment of youth should allow them to speak for themselves with their experiences and ideas, and creating the means for them to connect, share and develop solutions for the challenges they face.

Independent Dialogue: African Youth as Drivers for Decent Job Creation in Sustainable Food Systems

On 30 June 2021, the Thematic Working Group (TWG) on Rural Youth Employment (RYE) organised an Independent Dialogue to the United Nation Food System Summit (UNFSS). The event was centred around two game-changing solutions proposed to the UNFSS by Nourishing Africa (launch of a coalition for youth in African Agriculture) and FAO (empowering youth as innovators and change makers for sustainable food systems), that were chosen based on their focus on youth as drivers for food system change.
